France-based duo of Tabitha Chawinga and Rose Kabzere as well as US-based Temwa Chawinga have been ruled out of the Scorchers’ upcoming friendlies against South Africa.

The Malawi Women’s National Football Team will face Banyana Banyana on April 5 and 8.

FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka confirmed the unavailability of the trio in an interview yesterday.

On why the trio will not be available when the matches will be played during the Fifa Women’s Football International Window, which runs between March 31 and April 9, Zakazaka said: “It is because of South Africa’s late confirmation of the friendlies.”

Nevertheless, four other foreign-based players, namely Democratic Republic of Congo-based defender Chimwemwe Madise, Kazakhstan based duo of Bernadette Mkandawire and Vanessa Chikupira and Georgian-based Sabina Thom, will be available.

Thom has already joined the squad which has intensified preparations in Blantyre.

Fazili said the friendlies will help the team prepare for the second round of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) first qualifier against Angola on October 20.

The Scorchers, who lost 2-0 and won 3-2 against Zambia in other friendlies last month, sailed through to the next round of the Wafcon qualifiers without kicking a ball after their opponents in the first round Congo Brazaville pulled out.

South Africa Football Association invited the Scorchers for the friendlies as part of their preparations for the delayed 2024 Wafcon finals scheduled for July 5-26 in Morocco.
